John was born in March 1845. John's father was Anderson Kimbler and his mother was Katharine Lane (Kimbler).  His paternal grandparents were George Washington Kimbler and Mary (Polly) Estepp (Kimbler). He had seven brothers and six sisters, named Joseph, Hiram, Samuel, Socrates, William, Leah, James, Mary, Rachel, Hannah, Sarah, Martha and Rebecca. He had two half-brothers named William and Joseph.
