Joseph was born on January 10th, 1885. Joseph's father was James Owens Stephens and his mother was Melissa Isabell Anna Acker (Stephens).  His paternal grandparents were Needham Stephens and Peggy Jones (Stephens); his maternal grandparents were Jasper N Acker and Anna E Bailey (Acker). He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Iona, Albert, Derothy, Ida, Walter, Althea and James.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 43 on April 21st, 1928.
